Passion for DanceFounder & Artistic Director
Maya, a native of Mobile, Alabama holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of South Alabama and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems with a specialization in Mobile & Web Development from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She began dancing in college studying ballet & jazz. Over the years she continued her development participating, in classes, workshops, community events and serving as Dance Director of Revelation Knowledge Bible Church. She has over 19 years of experience with a passion for contemporary. In 2018, she successfully launched, Dancer’s Rock, a touring dance education workshop for dancers of all ages and levels. Dancer’s Rock successfully sold out workshops in Birmingham, Mobile, & Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The workshop featured a day of Master classes taught by participants from World of Dance, Ballet Magnificat Touring Company, and emerging local artist.
Maya loves being the Artistic Director of Dance Levels. Her most memorable works is creation of the original live production, Journey to Africa and spearheading Journey to Africa Cultural Arts Street Festival. Journey to Africa opened my eyes to the fact that there is a great need in and beyond our community for culturally relevant performing arts studios. There is a need for consistent, programs, performances, & events that provide culture relevance, dance education, & structure on a POSITIVE level. J2A continues to impact our organization in ways unimaginable. Initially, we didn’t know we had a story to tell, we didn’t understand the lack of culturally diverse studio & performances, we didn’t know how much of an impact our works made in our community, but now we do. This wisdom, knowledge, and understanding serves as a critical component that compels our future works.
